about

"This project started as a means to assimilate the distance between the environment I’ve known and the one I find myself situated in.

I wanted to re-appropriate the audio culture I encountered, intercept it’s message, rearrange its code. I began focusing on cassettes, mainly the second-hand kind often found in stores alongside other discarded ‘obsolete’ objects. My attention gravitated towards cassettes due to the medium having history and strong involvement in the democratisation of music. Being the first format that was truly accessible to the public, it made music more personal but also increasingly social at the same time I feel.

The gap between author and consumer shrunk a little, whether if it was in the form of compiling a mix-tape for a friend or ripping a new track from the radio a sense of ownership was instilled. So I bought them from the market, 3 for £5 until I found them at 25p each someplace else, often finding artists now less remembered.. overgrown grass obscures their visibility. I even found some physical attempts from years past of local artists, similar to this one I have organised. Perhaps in the same way in which their creations were affected by the influence of that times musical climate mine also borrows and builds upon things past. Perhaps this cassette has the same fate.

I’m o.k with that.

The process of sampling and musical borrowings felt right to me. I saw the process as musical migration.. how from multiple entities each with their own branch of micro-histories they layer atop of another, from many the illusion of one is created, or perhaps it is no illusion and the borders that create distinctions just need a little help dismantling. At times there are moments where interactions clash and instances of disconnect arise but it is also at these times when it feels most interesting, as if the resistance to be subdued creates new life not possible without the encounter between A & B.

Although aware of the prohibitions surrounding the re-contextualisation of an others work, their ideas, their creativity, the restraints intended to impose on others - I kept in mind how nothing is entirely independent of its parts. And how the past often tries to control the future, afraid of change of perhaps some parameter of the worlds workings valued as important, necessary, more so than others. Inherently, is progression not greatly aided when this grip that history persists upon unclenches its fist? allowing the past to be built upon, developed, to thrive rather than stagnate."
